At the start of every marathon you can see a forest of colourful compression socks. Do they really help, or is it just a fashion? In short: they can help, but more with recovery than with the run itself. Below we explain how compression works, when it makes sense and how the socks we have in the store differ.

How does compression work?

Compression garments gently squeeze the leg, usually most strongly at the ankle and less and less up the calf. This graduated pressure supports the return of blood from the limbs and reduces muscle vibration with every step. That is where the two main promises come from: faster recovery and less tired calves.

What does research say?

Studies show that compression can slightly reduce perceived muscle soreness in the days after intense exercise. Its effect on performance during the run itself, however, is small or none. Many people run in compression simply because their calves feel more secure in it, and that is a good reason too.

When to reach for them

  • Long runs and ultras, when your calves work for many hours.
  • Recovery after a race or a hard session, within a few hours of the effort.
  • Long journeys, for example by car or plane to a race, when your legs stay in one position for a long time.

If you have circulation problems, diabetes or other vascular conditions, talk to a doctor before wearing compression. Garments that are too tight, badly matched to your calf circumference, can do more harm than good.

How to choose the size

The size of compression garments is chosen not only by shoe size, but above all by the circumference of the calf at its widest point. Measure it in the morning, before your legs swell during the day. Well-fitted socks clearly hold the leg, but do not leave deep marks or cause tingling.

Compression, light compression and technical socks

Not every running sock is a compression sock. It is worth distinguishing three types:

  • Compression knee socks and calf sleeves, with clear, graduated pressure.
  • Running socks with light compression, which stabilise the foot in the shoe and gently hug the ankle.
  • Technical socks, which take care of wicking sweat, being seamless and cushioning, without pressure.
